Commonwealth Cup polo match leaves Goochland for FauquierAugust 2009After 23 years, Goochland County's Commonwealth Cup polo match is gone. For now. The event will move to Fauquier County this year and be held at Great Meadow Equestrian Center in The Plains. It will be combined with an annual wine festival, becoming The Virginia Wine & Polo Event at the Plains, scheduled for Sept. 12-13. Previously held at South Ceres Farm on Broad Street Road in Oilville, the event matches the Commonwealth team against the British Forces Foundation team in a friendly competition. It served as the chief fundraiser for Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, with proceeds helping pay for the group's programs and services such as medical and dental care, emergency financial assistance, home repair and a food pantry. "We just decided that with the economy and the expense of the event, we would sit out for a year and regroup with our development strategy," said Sally Graham, executive director for Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services. Last year, the expenses for the event were $97,000. After covering that amount, the event raised about $20,000, Graham said. "We just weren't clearing as much money as we felt the effort justified," she said, pointing to the large number of volunteers and hours that went into the event. Ticket sales also dropped last year, with about 1,000 general-ad3mission tickets sold compared with nearly 2,000 the year before. In 2008, tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 at the gate. Virginia Wine Expo UpdateMarch 2010Great weekend at Richmond Convention Center with exhibitors from around Virginia, and attendees also from all over Virginia and beyond all coming together to sample Virginia's finest at the 2010 Virginia Wine Expo. For the second year, Love Limousine's exhibit promoted discounts on limousine service for 6 hour winery tours and the value of a designated driver, that when split 6 or 8 ways becomes very affordable when compared to the alternative. It was fun to speak with those who stopped at our booth to register for the 8 hour winery tour raffle drawing. We also gave away canvas two bottle wine bags and 7-piece, wine accessory sets. We welcome your input on our services, and particularly are interested in hearing of your experiences in Virginia's Wine Country. Join our Facebook discussion of Virginia Wine.
