Colonial Yorktown
Colonial Yorktown
On October 19, 1781, the decisive military campaign, the Siege of Yorktown ended the six-year struggle for American independence with a British surrender to American and French forces under the command of George Washington.
Colonial Yorktown Today at the Yorktown Victory Center, America’s evolution to nationhood is chronicled in exhibits and outdoor living history. Indoor exhibition galleries recount the war’s effect on 10 ordinary men and women who witnessed the Revolution, highlight the roles of different nationalities in the Siege of Yorktown.

An outdoor exhibit walkway details events that led to American colonies independence from Britain. Visitors can explore a re-created Continental Army encampment, and a 1780s farm complete with a house, kitchen, tobacco barn, crop fields, and herb and vegetable garden, that shows how many Americans lived in the decade following the Revolution.

Colonial Yorktown In addition to Colonial Yorktown and the Yorktown Victory Center, the Yorktown beach front has been developed into a first class getaway destination. Prisitine sandy beaches and clean, deep running blue waters are a perfect location for fun and sun after tours of Colonial Yorktown.

If sun bathing is not your speed there are a number of options for watercraft fun including routinely high winds for first-class wind surfing not to mention exceptional river fishing. Just ask the Gloucester fisherman on the north bank of the York River across from Yorktown. Plentiful hotel accommodations make the Yorktown beaches a viable option when touring the Historical Triangle
